Jonathan Pennington received the People’s Choice Award in recognition of his direction in the 2012 Globe Awards for Best Direction and Production of a Musical, Sweeney Todd. His direction was also recognized with a series awards in the 2013 Globe Awards for Best Direction of a Musical and Best Production of a Musical, Avenue Q. In the 16 preceding years, Jonathan has been involved with over 60 musical theater productions, Off-Broadway, and touring productions. His debut as a Director in Little Shop of Horrors*, was followed by Chicago, Rent*, Tick, Tick.. Boom!*, The Wedding Singer, Annie*, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, Forever Plaid*, Grease*, Hairspray, The Rocky Horror Show, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story*, Rat Pack Lounge*, Annie Get Your Gun, The Marvelous Wonderettes*, The Addams Family, Dreamwork’s Shrek*, Rapunzarella White*, Sweeney Todd (Globe Award)*, All Shook Up, Jekyll & Hyde (B’way), Avenue Q (Globe Award)*, Fame, Suds: The Soap-Opera Musical Comedy, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Wizard of Oz, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin*, High School Musical, Pinocchio, and White Christmas. Currently, Jonathan is directing The Great American Trailer Park Musical.
Jonathan conceived and created his own musical theatre acting company, JP STUDIOS, 10 years ago. JP STUDIOS is a musical theatre company and is dedicated to theater excellence and education that has performed over 13 musicals a year for the past 10 years.
Jonathan continues to serve as Executive Producer and Director of JP STUDIOS at the Cameo Theatre and is dedicated to creating a positive creative environment for actors and artists to grow and express themselves on stage. Jonathan believes that theatre helps not only actors, but also audience members to relate to the world around us and helps us grow in our understanding of culture and community. JP Studios has Help raise money for the AIDS Foundation and theFood Bank.
Jonathan received awards for successfully restoring and running the Woodlawn Theatre, a historical venue where he met June Rachelson Ospa and they produced their first work venture together, Rapunzarella White. He has successfully restored and is running a second historic location, Cameo Theater, where his production company JP STUDIOS is honored to be staging shows and calls Cameo ‘home base’. In addition to his home base, Jonathan is directing on a third historic stage, Brauntex Theater in New Braunfels, where he currently staged a second production of Rapunzarella White and is currently directing The Addams Family.
Jonathan received an award for his set designs for Avenue Q. Other of his favorite original set designs are Sweeney Todd, Rocky Horror Show, Evil Dead, All Shook Up, Annie, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, Cats, Little Shop of Horrors, Rapunzarella White, Disney’s Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin.
In addition to being a Casting Director for numerous stage productions, Jonathan also casts for local television stations for commercials. He writes scripts, shoots video, edits audio, and designs graphic art for print media. Since media is one of his strong passions, Jonathan incorporates these elements his stage productions as well.
In his off time from directing, Jonathan enjoys acting. He is currently on his fifth year of sell out performances in the role of Dr. Frank-n-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show live at Cameo Theater. He starred in the Texas premier of Evil Dead: The Musical as Ash and Johnny Angel in Suds: The Soap-Opera Musical Comedy. He performed as Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar and performed with Barry Manilow Live on his Dancin’ In The Street Tour.
Jonathan was asked by NYC playrights Mark Weiser to direct The Cure: A Vampire Musical and June Rachelson-Ospa to direct Rapunzarella White. As a playwright himself, Jonathan wrote a new pop version of the original classic story of Peter Pan with music artist Trece Vivenzio. Their other works include Mystery Kids, Inc. and Teen Incorporated with writer’s Michael Camden and Chris Rutz.
